Legendary Ghanaian Afrobeat pioneer Ebo Taylor releases a new studio album in collaboration with Jazz Is Dead founders Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. At the age of 88, Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat pioneer Ebo Taylor traveled to the U.S. for the first time to perform at the now iconic Jazz Is Dead concert series, which sold out venues nationwide. During this time, Ebo recorded a psychedelic Afrobeat album with Jazz Is Dead producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
A collaboration that Ebo fans around the world would not have expected and that will certainly satisfy connoisseurs of classic West African funk. The swirling horns and gritty guitars on "Ebo Taylor JID022" are reminiscent of his groundbreaking recordings from the seventies, which made him one of the most prolific and revolutionary African artists of all time. Recorded at Adrian Younge's Linear Labs Studio, this album of polyrhythmic percussion and twangy, fuzzed out guitars proves that rhythm is the key to everything. The ensemble of Ghanaian backing vocalists exudes a uniquely spiritual sound that transports listeners back to Ebo's heyday.
One of the most exciting components of this album, however, is Taylor's distinctive approach to vocal styling. His heartfelt lyrics about love, peace and spirituality reflect his decades of experience and wisdom. This is an Afrobeat classic that is a true highlight in the canon of Ebo Taylor's undeniable catalog and a crown jewel in the Jazz Is Dead library.
