Archers Of Loaf – Icky Mettle

Icky Mettle, the 1993 debut from Archers of Loaf, is a ferocious and unfiltered blast of early '90s indie rock—equal parts sneer, slop, and brilliance. Coming out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the band landed squarely in the same post-Pavement, pre-grunge sweet spot that defined the era, yet carved their own path with a sound that was both abrasive and weirdly catchy.

From the opening jolt of “Web in Front,” with its now-iconic line “And there’s a chance that things’ll get weird / Yeah, that’s a possibility”, the album sets a tone of twitchy, awkward defiance. Eric Bachmann’s vocals strain and yelp with an almost unhinged energy, while the band plays like they’re constantly on the verge of falling apart—and that tension is part of the charm.
