Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou’s Church of Kidane Mehret is a deeply spiritual and historically rich release, capturing the Ethiopian nun and composer’s rare 1972 private press recording in its entirety. The album was recorded in various churches throughout Jerusalem and showcases Emahoy performing on piano, harmonium, and pipe organ—marking the first time her performances on harmonium and organ have been made publicly available. The recordings radiate a contemplative, sacred atmosphere, blending Ethiopian Orthodox religious sensibilities with her singular, expressive style.
Also included are two previously unreleased solo piano pieces from her 1963 album Der Sang des Meeres. Tracks like “Ave Maria,” “Spring Ode – Meskerem,” and “Essay on Mahlet, The Prayer of Saint Yared” emphasize her ability to fuse liturgical solemnity with lyrical invention. The result is an album that feels timeless and meditative, offering a rare look into her devotional and musical world.
