Fields of the Nephilim was formed in 1984 and is the work of singer and frontman Carl McCoy. The band has had a significant impact, particularly in the gothic scene, but also in metal and electronic music, and this impact continues to this day. Their influence can be traced to bands such as Swans, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Explosions In The Sky, Wolves in The Throne Room, Behemoth, and many more.
*The Nephilim* was recorded in a former courthouse in the Somerset countryside where condemned defendants were hanged. "Moonchild" is the band's best-known song, having reached number 28 in the UK Singles Chart. LouderSound called it a classic, saying it "perfectly encapsulates this era of the band, featuring some sophisticated guitar work, great bass lines from Tony Pettitt, Nod's outstanding drumming, and McCoy's distinctive vocals."
In a 2013 review of the album, PopMatters wrote: "Considered not only their finest work but also one of the masterpieces of the British gothic scene, the band's second album is a seamless, hour-long journey into a surreal land populated by chiming guitars, hypnotic bass, found samples, and McCoy's narration.
The Nephilim, released in 1988 and not re-pressed on vinyl since. Pressed on golden brown vinyl and expanded to a double LP, the album includes their epic, legendary song "Moonchild" plus three bonus tracks.
