An authoritative debut
After a mixtape four years ago and an EP two years ago, Kelela's eagerly awaited first album was released in 2017.
"Take Me Apart" is the name of the 14-song debut by the US artist with Ethiopian roots. On it, she skillfully combines R'n'B and electro with elements of grime, hip-hop and pop.
Kelela revealed just how good this combination sounds back in August with the first single release from "Take Me Apart": "LMK".
Arca, Jam City, Ariel Rechtshaid, Mocky and Al Shux were all involved in the production of the new album.
Here it is at last: Kelela's first album. "Take Me Apart" sets new standards for alternative R'n'B.
Reviews
"... the tracks shimmer hypnotically, nestle gently, rumble edgy, seduce velvety tenderly, shine radiantly in the sun of a thousand synths and do only one thing: they don't bore." (stereoplay, November 2017)
"No one has combined the legacy of gospel and jazz divas with the zeitgeist in the clubs as smartly as Kelela - soul music in limbo and tenderness as the new thing." (SPEX cover story September-October 2017)
