Vs. is the only full-length studio album released by Mission of Burma before their initial breakup in 1983, yet it remains one of the most influential post-punk records of all time. Released in 1982, the album takes the raw punk energy of their Signals, Calls, and Marches (1981) EP and expands it into something even more aggressive, dissonant, and complex.
Blending elements of punk, noise rock, and avant-garde experimentation, Vs. helped lay the groundwork for alternative rock, post-hardcore, and the indie underground, inspiring bands like Sonic Youth, Fugazi, Pixies, and Nirvana.
Reviews
"It's daunting to imagine just how far Mission of Burma could have taken its music had Roger Miller's hearing problems not caused the band to break up the following year, but regardless of lost potential, very few American bands from the 1980s released an album as ambitious or as powerful as Vs., and it still sounds like a classic. Rykodisc's remastered 1997 reissue sounds terrific and adds four solid bonus tracks." Allmusic
