After "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", "A Saucerful of Secrets" was Pink Floyd's second album. During the recordings in 1967/1968 in the Abbey Road Studios the mental problems of Syd Barrett increased more and more, also two of his songs were not included in the album in the end. The band was looking for a second guitarist: At first Jeff Beck was discussed, but he proved to be too expensive. The choice finally fell on David Gilmour, a friend of the band. The last recordings of the album were played by Gilmour alone. The final separation from Syd Barrett then took place in April 1968.
With classics such as "Set the Controls For The Heart Of The Sun," "Remember a Day" and "Jugband Blues," A Saucerful Of Secrets is the only album to feature the five band members: Roger Waters on bass and vocals, Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Syd Barrett and David Gilmour on guitar and vocals.
Reviews"A fascinating transitional record that captures the band teetering between psychedelic whimsy and cosmic exploration." — Pitchfork"An underrated gem — moody, experimental, and deeply atmospheric. The title track alone is a mini-epic of sonic adventure." — AllMusic"You can hear the birth of space rock in real time. A Saucerful of Secrets is strange, haunting, and beautiful." — Mojo"It’s where the Floyd legend really starts to take shape — eerie soundscapes, avant-garde textures, and a widening of vision." — The Quietus"The album glows with a restless, exploratory energy. A bold step into the unknown." — UncutReview
