- War is the album that transformed U2 from post-punk upstarts into politically charged rock icons. Released in 1983, it channels the turbulence of the early '80s—conflict in Northern Ireland, the Cold War, and global unrest—into a tightly focused and emotionally urgent collection of songs. Musically, it’s rawer and more aggressive than its predecessors, with The Edge’s militaristic guitar stabs, Larry Mullen Jr.’s thunderous drums, and Bono’s impassioned vocals all working in unison to create a sense of confrontation and purpose.
Opener “Sunday Bloody Sunday” remains one of the most searing protest songs in rock history, while “New Year’s Day” balances political themes with a haunting melody that became a global hit. Elsewhere, tracks like “Seconds” and “40” show the band’s growing maturity and spiritual overtones. War doesn’t just wear its politics on its sleeve—it hammers them into every riff and lyric, making it one of U2’s most visceral and enduring statements.
Mastered by Arnie Acosta and cut at Bernie Grundman Mastering. Includes 12" x 12" deluxe 16-page booklet.

"…War immediately announces itself as U2's most focused and hardest-rocking album to date. Blowing away the fuzzy, sonic indulgences of October with propulsive, martial rhythms and shards of guitar, War bristles with anger, despair, and above all, passion. Previously, Bono's attempts at messages came across as grandstanding, but his vision becomes remarkably clear on this record." – All Music GuideReview
