Nothingface is where the weirdness truly crystallized—an ambitious, futuristic, and singular metal album that pushed boundaries in every direction. While the Canadian band started as a raw, noisy thrash outfit, by Nothingface, they'd evolved into something much stranger and smarter: science fiction intellectuals with guitars, fusing metal aggression with progressive rock intricacy and avant-garde spirit.
I't's is cold, jagged, and cerebral—but never sterile. The album trades in thrash’s usual brute force for angular riffs, unexpected time signatures, and dissonant harmonies. Guitarist Piggy (Denis D'Amour) leads the charge with unorthodox chord voicings, unusual note choices, and a refusal to rely on traditional power chords. His tone is clean and mechanical, perfectly suited to the band’s dystopian, cybernetic themes.
The rhythm section—Away (Michel Langevin) on drums and Blacky (Jean-Yves Thériault) on bass—is tight and fluid, navigating bizarre shifts and rhythmic hiccups with surgical precision. Meanwhile, Snake (Denis Bélanger) ditches his early barking vocals in favor of something more melodic and surreal, adding to the album’s dreamlike, sci-fi feel.
This remains Voïvod’s most acclaimed album and a high watermark of progressive metal. It stands alongside records like Rust in Peace, Operation: Mindcrime, and Master of Puppets as one of the genre’s most intelligent, daring moments.
Despite being released by a major label (MCA), the album retains its outsider, experimental edge—proof that you could be strange, cerebral, and heavy and still make a mark.
It's a heady, sci-fi mindwarp that rewards deep listening. It’s heavy, yes—but also weird, textured, and visionary. If you like your metal twisted into Möbius strips and broadcast from another dimension, this is essential.
Reviews
"Nothingface also turned out to be their most commercially successful album, making an appearance on the Billboard charts. Jason Newsted of Metallica has praised Voivod as one of his favorite metal bands on numerous occasions, and after hearing Nothingface, it's easy to understand why." Allmusic
